If he can produce the republican votes in the house and Senate his value as a deal maker will increase 10 fold. This will be only a down payment for the republicans to start undoing the damage they have caused to themselves with Hispanics. I do no think it will help Romney or the repuks on 2012 but if they can wrap their minds around doing Immigration reform to win Hispanics back they will be able to compete for the voting block on the issues of taxing and the social stuff...

Harry Reid To Rubio: Stop Talking And Release Your DREAM Act

http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2012/05/harry-reid-marco-rubio-dream-act-obama.php

"Uh, how about living by the spirit of the LAW?"

Oh? Did Michele Bachmann live by the spirit of the US law? Law is only for other people...not for those preaching it. Otherwise, everyone will be respectfully stopping at the pedestrian crossing.

Sadashiv:

The problem is with immigrants already in the country, not becoming citizens. There are nearly five million of them. These are the essential defacto reps of present and future immigrants. But, half of these characters refuse to become citizens..claiming their culture or some other baloney. But, then who can blame them..after all, Michele Bachmann leads by example. Her husband obviously cannot leave his Swiss heritate behind...and who complains about immigrants not assimilating and leaving their cultures behind? Who complains about Mexicans waving Mexican flag on the American soil? Michele Bachmann and her pal Steve King and the redneck confederate flag wavers. My suggestion to them...you become fully American first...you tear up your Swiss flag first and you tear up the confederate flag first before lecturing others. Having said that, I strongly feel that had all immigrants become citizens in the past and voted on a regular basis, we will not have Michele Bachmann in congress today. And had African American women married African men in large numbers and brought them and their families to this country, racist whites will be a minority at least in the state of Georgia and we wont have Nathan Deal as governor, Georgia immigration laws and I am pretty certain that Todd Davis (who was executed despite evidence of innocence) will not only be breathing but will be walking the streets of Savannah as a free man! So, immigrants who refuse to become citizens bear at least part of the blame for the predicament.

“We want them to live by the spirit of the memorandum,” Luis Gutierrez said.

Uh, how about living by the spirit of the LAW?

Rep. Gutierrez: I drafted amnesty language for White House

Since a controversy arose over the memo last summer, the administration and ICE have insisted it was written by career ICE professionals

Somebody's lying.

Immigrants in general are very vulnerable group in all countries without exception, including US and UK. They are often at the mercy of local Govt legislation, but have no say at all in the legislative process that concerns them. While it is fully understandable that every sovereighn country have right to decide how much of immigration they want to allow. But having made a decision to accept somebody's application for permanant residency, the process should be time bound, fair, consistent and transparent. The rules for granting permanant residency should not be changed arbitrarily. I find that all countries have a long way to go in this direction. US treats immigrants a bit better than other countries, but it is nowhere near where it should be. The US immigration process is very opaque, inconsistent, and anything but time bound. People who go through US legal immigration process know the pain. US has very serious work to do in this area if they want to continue to lead the world. If they want to follow the world, then it is another matter.

Bachmann now claims that she is a 100 % American "girl" because she has renounced her "Swiss" citizenship. The truth is she would have kept her Swiss citizenship if not for the uproar especially from the right wing. And what about the timing. Good Lord she is not the Republican nominee for the President of United States.

An undocumented immigrant who toils day and night in the US making enormous amount of sacrifices is greater patriot than people such has Bachmann. Just by returning her part of the loot and letting her family to keep the remaining will not wash away her sins. Sorry to say Bachmann career in politics is 100% toast.

"It depends. They take everybody with enough money..."

They love money not other people. However, with no history of invading and colonizing other countries, Switzerland has no moral obligation to let in foreigners..that much I will give.

Wonder how Singaporeans will take to another westerner "buying" Singapore citizenship. There has recently been bitter opposition to foreigners working in the country. Most of it has to do with greed and selfishness with most Singaporeans who oppose foreign talent themselves seeking jobs abroad actively. They just want a one way street where they are allowed to work abroad but foreigners are not allowed to work in their countries. To a greater extent, Aussies and Brits suffer from this disease, although not Americans and Canadians.

"Also have you been to Zurich recently? I was there last year after a gap of 15 years and the place is full of Moslems from the Middle East."

Lot of them are illegal!

"Sounds strange to me because Switzerland is the preferred destination for money laundering for many all over the world. According to a report from Swiss Bank Association people from the "poor" country of India hold more deposits in Swiss banks (1.5+ trillion dollars estimate) than all other countries combined. Seems like Swiss don't differentiate among ethnicities when it comes to money."

They like color of Asian money but not the color of the Asian skin. Guess Mark Kirkorian and Michele Bachmann are the same although they will hold their pointy noses and back up the very dark skinned Michele Malkin.

"The Swiss are pretty racist."

It depends. They take everybody with enough money...

From what I have read recently, there is a move in Switzerland to limit giving Germans work permits: http://www.thelocal.de/money/20120426-42177.html

Facebook Co-Founder Saverin Gives Up U.S. Citizenship Before IPO
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-05-11/facebook-co-founder-saverin-gives-up-u-s-citizenship-before-ipo.html

Eduardo Saverin, the billionaire co- founder of Facebook Inc. (FB), renounced his U.S. citizenship before an initial public offering that values the social network at as much as $96 billion, a move that may reduce his tax bill...

"The Swiss are pretty racist."

Switzerland, unfortunately, has always made it very hard for immigrants to obtain Swiss citizenship. However, the process is the same for all, and a black American (or an Indian American) has to jump through the same hoops as a white American.

Also have you been to Zurich recently? I was there last year after a gap of 15 years and the place is full of Moslems from the Middle East.

USC:

The Swiss are pretty racist. They will confer citizenship to the spouse if he or she is white or white enough to be accepted by the Swiss society. I know of a few cases where Asian Americans and Singaporeans had married Swiss nationals and they are stuck in their countries. One has been married to a Swiss since 1980 and neither she nor their children can get Swiss residency let alone a Swiss citizenship. I do not know about white privilege in America, but in Switzerland whiteness has its privileges..probably more so than the US South..and Bachmann and her daughters are enjoying that privilege. People will complain that Asian countries have the same problem..dont think so...Americans married to Japanese got their residency within six months and move to Japan.

Earlier today, the Department of Justice filed a formal legal complaint against Sheriff Joe Arpaio and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) alleging widespread constitutional violations and lawless mistreatment of Latinos. According to the complaint, Arpaio and his staff engaged in widespread, violent and demeaning mistreatment of Latino residents of Maricopa County, often targeting individuals solely because of their race:

1. Forcing Women To Sleep In Their Own Menstrual Blood: In Arpaio’s jails, “female Latino LEP prisoners have been denied basic sanitary items. In some instances, female Latino LEP prisoners have been forced to remain with sheets or pants soiled from menstruation because of MCSO’s failure to ensure that detention officers provide language assistance in such circumstances.”

2. Assaulting Pregnant Women: “[A]n MCSO officer stopped a Latina woman – a citizen of the United States and five months pregnant at the time – as she pulled into her driveway. After she exited her car, the officer then insisted that she sit on the hood of the car. When she refused, the officer grabbed her arms, pulled them behind her back, and slammed her, stomach first, into the vehicle three times. He then dragged her to the patrol car and shoved her into the backseat. He left her in the patrol car for approximately 30 minutes without air conditioning. The MCSO officer ultimately issued a citation for failure to provide identification.”

3. Stalking Latino Women: “In another instance, during a crime suppression operation, two MCSO officers followed a Latina woman, a citizen of the United States, for a quarter of a mile to her home. The officers did not turn on their emergency lights, but insisted that the woman remain in her car when she attempted to exit the car and enter her home. The officers’ stated reasons for approaching the woman was a non-functioning license plate light. When the woman attempted to enter her home, the officers used force to take her to the ground, kneed her in the back, and handcuffed her. The woman was then taken to an MCSO substation, cited for ‘disorderly conduct,’ and returned home. The disorderly conduct citation was subsequently dismissed.”

4. Criminalizing Being A Latino: “During raids, [Arpaio's Criminal Enforcement Squad] typically seizes all Latinos present, whether they are listed on the warrant or not. For example, in one raid CES had a search warrant for 67 people, yet 109 people were detained. Fifty-nine people were arrested and 50 held for several hours before they were released. Those detained, but not on the warrant, were seized because they were Latino and present at the time of the raid. No legal justification existed for their detention.”

5. Criminalizing Living Next To The Wrong People: “[D]u.ring a raid of a house suspected of containing human smugglers and their victims . . . officers went to an adjacent house, which was occupied by a Latino family. The officers entered the adjacent house and searched it, without a warrant and without the residents’ knowing consent. Although they found no evidence of criminal activity, after the search was over, the officers zip-tied the residents, a Latino man, a legal permanent resident of the United States, and his 12-year-old Latino son, a citizen of the United States, and required them to sit on the sidewalk for more than one hour, along with approximately 10 persons who had been seized from the target house, before being released”

6. Ignoring Rape: Because of Arpaio’s obsessive focus on “low-level immigration offenses” his officers failed “to adequately respond to reports of sexual violence, including allegations of rape, sexual assault, and sexual abuse of girls.”

7. Widespread Use Of Racial Slurs: “MCSO personnel responsible for prisoners held in MCSO jails routinely direct racial slurs toward Latino prisoners, including calling Latino prisoners ‘paisas,’ ‘wetbacks,’ ‘Mexican bitches,’ ‘fucking Mexicans,’ and ‘stupid Mexicans.’”

8. Widespread Racial Profiling: “[I]n the southwest portion of the County, the study found that Latino drivers are almost four times more likely to be stopped by MCSO officers than non-Latino drivers engaged in similar conduct. . . . In the northwest portion of the County, the study found that Latino drivers are over seven times more likely to be stopped by MCSO officers than non-Latino drivers engaged in similar conduct. . . . Most strikingly, in the northeast portion of the County, the study found that Latino drivers are nearly nine times more likely to be stopped by MCSO officers than non-Latino drivers engaged in similar conduct.”

9. Random, Unlawful Detention Of Latinos: “MCSO officers stopped a car carrying four Latino men, although the car was not violating any traffic laws. The MCSO officers ordered the men out of the car, zip-tied them, and made them sit on the curb for an hour before releasing all of them. The only reason given for the stop was that the men’s car ‘was a little low,’ which is not a criminal or traffic violation.”

10. Group Punishments For Latinos: “In some instances, when a Latino [Low English Proficiency] prisoner has been unable to understand commands given in English, MCSO detention officers have put an entire area of the jail in lockdown—effectively preventing all the prisoners in that area from accessing a number of privileges because of the Latino LEP prisoner’s inability to understand English, inciting hostility toward the LEP prisoner, and potentially placing MCSO officers and other prisoners in harm’s way.”

Shelly is attempting to portray that she somehow got Swiss citizenship automatically and that she didn't actively seek it:

http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/ticket/michele-bachmann-withdraw-her-swiss-citizenship-during-her-201609467.html

The facts are here:

Automatic here means that she became eligible without strings when she married her husband. Automatic does not mean she did not have to fill out an application. So, she actively sought Swiss citizenship.

http://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/politics/foreign_affairs/Bachmann_puts_spotlight_on_Swiss_citizenship.html?cid=32661610

The congresswoman’s office confirmed she had received Swiss citizenship and attributed the decision to her children.

“Congresswoman Bachmann’s husband is of Swiss descent, so she has been eligible for dual-citizenship since they got married in 1978. However, recently some of their children wanted to exercise their eligibility for dual-citizenship so they went through the process as a family,” said Bachmann spokesperson Becky Rogness.

gg:

Never thought about this until now...may be Michelle Bachmann is sick and tired of America turning into a non-white country and wants to retire in a white part of the world. I stood right next to her when she came through Indiana for a campaign back in 2011...she and her family reek of racism..just stinks of bigotry! I think she will be more accepting of same race gay couples over interracial couples. If her daughter brought home an Asian boyfriend she will probably throw up!

"Here's what's new: U.S. population of 313,513,867 with a net gain of one person every 14 seconds, i.e., the starting point matters greatly. At our current population we already deplete resources like water and farmland and are experiencing habitat and species loss. Look up what the biggest threat to biodiversity is. You guessed it--population growth. High immigration utopians need to face the reality that what makes them feel good is simply unsustainable from an ecological perspective."

Yes Jack Singapore and Hong Kong are the poorest countries in the world, and Belarus and Ukraine are the riches! Agreed!

"Racist bigot Mark Kirkorian of the racist bigoted Center for Immigration Studies calls white racist bigot female Michele Bachman a patriot despite taking up Swiss citizenship...and blames it all on the lefties...."

A person who runs for the most powerful office in US and calls herself a patriot, chooses to become a citizen of tiny nation of Switzerland. This shows that Michele Bachmann is an AINO ( American in name only ). Why else she would choose the land of the scot free for the land of the free ?

BTW she is against chain immigration but she was able to obtain citizenship for her entire family and three kids through the citizenship of her husband who in turn got it from his parents. Does she know that Switzerland has 4 official languages ? Ha Ha ...

Jack just admit it - you simply hate babies! You know those chubby ones that grow up to use the planet's resources with no regard to your concerns, they are positively evil!

Population has vastly increased since 1900 - True

The inventions of electricity (and all that stems from it), air/space travel, medical treatments have made the world a worse place. The increase in life expectancy has caused over population thus medical advancements should be punishable by the death penalty.

Your views are so backed up by history!

WOW who knew that Jack was sooo Green!!! Now we know the truth about him his deport them all agenda is all about saving the enviroment....bless your heart!!!

Jack, if those are your true views, then you should be pro birth control and pro abortion. Both should be free to women who don't want to have children, right?

People must realize no one (lawmakers esp) cares a damn about folks waiting in line for green card. I have never heard an argument about second class status when it came to H1B or others waiting in line. However democrats seem to be more concerned about undocumented not realizing their "full dream" and their second class status in the country. Second class status and discrimination on various grounds are the basic tenants of US immigration laws and democrats know that very well, why then this fake concern.

"If Democrats really dont like the bill , All they have to do is to ask Obama to praise Rubio and support this bill openly from the briefing room or rose garden, It will be DOA in the house and senate."

LOL so true...

Other names for DREAM ACT aka Full Dream

1. Dream 2.0

4. Half Loaf (FAIR)
5. Half Cooked
6. Dream SBV (Scaled Back Version)
7. more coming ...

I agree with Greg politics is the art of the possible and this bill may have a chance to pass and help some immigrants. If is fair or not to others is a different question, right now you have to get what you can out of this do nothing congress.

GOP fumbles Hispanic outreach

Hoping to explain their plans to win over the country’s 12 million Hispanic voters, Republicans instead muddied their message on the sensitive subject of immigration.

I've said before that I think the Rubio concept is worth considering as it represents an improvement over the current system and since comprehensive reform is not possible for the foreseeable future, we need to focus on the possible rather than the ideal. I think the E-1/E-2 comparison is apt in terms of renewability of the visa, but the statement that E visa holders cannot get green cards is not correct. They can apply in categories in which they qualify. Many E visa holders are employed and can pursue labor certifications. Owners can sometimes qualify for EB-5 investor green cards.

@Joef - with dream visa dreamers can file for gc . it is not similar to e1/e2

http://www.abajournal.com/magazine/article/chasing_the_dream_sorting_fact_and_myth_is_biggest_obstacle_to_immigration_/

Gregory Siskind, a founding member of immigration firm Siskind Susser in Memphis, Tenn., hates (his word) the argument that immigrants don’t want to assimilate. “In the early 1900s, it was an almost completely open immigration system,” he says. “The hardest part of coming into Ellis Island was affording a ticket. All you had to do was list on the ship form that you had someone you were meeting in the United States and have a little money in your pocket.”

Siskind also maintains that opposition to immigration has a long tradition in the U.S. “Pick up a newspaper from 100 years ago,” he says. “You think anti-immigration groups are active today? They were much more incensed then about all the Yiddish and Italian languages they heard. There’s nothing new about what we’re arguing today.”

@gg: E1/E2 do not allow immigration intent.
From Greg's webpage about E1/E2, http://www.visalaw.com/11sep1/2sep111.html
"The letter must contain a statement of unequivocal intent that the applicant will depart the U.S. when E-1 status ends."
"The letter should contain a statement of unequivocal intent that the applicant will depart the U.S. when E-2 status ends."

"This strikes me like something like the E1/E2 visa/status. Unlimited extensions, but no path to LPR"

No, they are eligible to file for GC using the existing process after the initial period.

DREAM VISA is likely to ignite HR3012/S1983 again. It will be difficult to justify country wide quotas based on current backlog and future backlog with DREAM. No more country wide quotas, first come first served.

@Sa: It is about status. The general public doesn't know the difference between visa and status.
This strikes me like something like the E1/E2 visa/status. Unlimited extensions, but no path to LPR.

"DREAM VISA (non-immigrant) to have unlimited extensions ......"

DREAM VISA will have unlimited extensions along with unlimited numbers . Try selling that to your party Mr. Rubio.

"When has the government cared about inefficiencies, now more people will suffer.... but let's wait and see if it happens so far is all a DREAM!!!"

USCIS never thinks it is inefficient. We all know that, USCIS is the most inefficient federal agency.

When these people talk of non immigrant visas, Do these people ever have to go to a consulate abroad to get a VISA stamped in their passports? I dont think these folks will have any interest in taking such a route along with other non immigrants.

Is Mr. Rubio proposing visa stamping in the passports by USCIS ? Is USCIS going to issue a free EAD/AP for these folks? Are these folks going to pay same expensive fees for EADS and travel documents? I would love to see how Mr. Rubio is going to make it "fair" along with other non immigrants. The whole fairness argument is a non starter for CHC and for all practical purposes this fairness argument is a talking point to stop immigration bills from advancing.

"My only question is if USCIS is ready for the deluge of these applications? USCIS processing will come to a grinding halt with these millions of applications."

When has the government cared about inefficiencies, now more people will suffer.... but let's wait and see if it happens so far is all a DREAM!!!

"A non-immigrant visa with unlimited extentions and no path to become a permanent resident? Dream? Nightmare? Eternal purgatory?
"

Its better than living the "shadows". I will take it if I were in the situation some of these kids/adults are in.

My only question is if USCIS is ready for the deluge of these applications? USCIS processing will come to a grinding halt with these millions of applications.

A non-immigrant visa with unlimited extentions and no path to become a permanent resident? Dream? Nightmare? Eternal purgatory?

We (including the GOP) can all Dream!!
