New Pro-Entrepreneur USCIS Policies: More Rhetoric Than Reality?

USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas, probably one of the best directors the agency has ever had, still faces a herculean task in changing the culture of an agency that still instinctively enforcement-oriented and not on encouraging immigration. Mayorkas announced a number of changes several months ago that were intended to encourage business entrepreneurs to immigrate to the United States. Yet, as CNN notes in a story on an Israeli high tech company founder, the process is anything but easy. Of course, now that CNN has reported on the story, I expect the problem to be solved. That’s usually how it goes. The USCIS public affairs folks have common sense and know this is not in the agency’s best interests (and obviously not good for the United States). But this shouldn’t be what has to happen for the agency to do what it is already promising to do.
