"deporting ordinary people guilty only of lacking the proper immigration status"
So your position is that most every current (and future) unlawfully present person should be immune from having to leave and just be allowed to stay, right? So why not just call for repeal of the INA so a mockery is not made of the rule of law? Why have visa categories and limits at all if the law is to just be ignored? At some point, law either means something or not. Those who want immigration law to mean nothing should just be aboveboard about it and openly call for making unlimited immigration and open borders the law like Robert L. Bartley used to. Even if they don't get it they will try to keep the law from being enforced anyway--so why not take a shot at what you really want? I think the answer is that support for amnesty is contingent upon controlling immigration going forward. If you admit that you have no intention of that, you'll have a hard time getting the amnesty through.
