1. COMMENT
Talent Squeeze
Maclean's
http://www2.macleans.ca/2009/11/10/stealing-talent-from-uncle-sam/
reports that Canada is actively promoting to and recruiting the
skilled immigrants squeezed out by US immigration laws. "Most of
the workers have been educated at US universities, the document
went on, obtaining degrees in valued fields like biomedical
research or software engineering... Microsoft last year opened a
70,000-sq.-foot "development centre" in the Vancouver suburb of
Richmond to house 300 workers hailing from more than 40 different
countries. Many have "immigration challenges" preventing them
from working in the US."

Readers can share comments, email: mailto:editor@ilw.com (up to
300-words). Past correspondence is available in our archives
http://www.ilw.com/immigdaily/archives.shtm
(a) Dear Editor:
In (11/12/05 ID) issue, ID published my preface to a humorous
letter that I had then recently sent to the National Visa
Center. My wife and I had filed a joint I-864 Affidavit of
Support on behalf of a family friend and the NVC had requested
proof that I was currently self-employed. Due to space
limitations, you published my preface to the letter but not the
letter itself. As I believe your readers would enjoy reading
this letter, I want to inform them that they can now view it on
my website, which can be found by typing my name in Google. It
is posted there under Successful Cases, in the category I-864
Affidavit of Support.
Oscar Abraham Jaeger, Esq. Brooklyn, N.Y.
(b) Dear Editor:
Regarding the headlines "These two debates don't mix" and "Health
care debate focuses on legal immigrants" (11/11/09 ID), why
should the Obama administration be given a pass on immigration?
Anyone who thinks that Obama is postponing action on immigration
reform only because he is too busy with health care might just as
well go to Iraq to look harder for Saddam Hussein's WMD or find
the people who helped Saddam "plan" the 9/11 attacks. The
candidate who once spoke out against scapegoating immigrants is
so far turning out to be the most anti-immigrant president
America has had since Calvin Coolidge signed the Northern
Europeans only immigration law of 1924. By sending out USCIS and
ICE inspectors to go on more than 25,000 fishing expeditions
looking for minor employer paperwork violations or alleged fraud
under every mattress and blade of grass, while allowing racist
local officials to terrorize Latino neighborhoods and break up
minority US citizen families under 287(g), and at the same time
throwing thousands of darker skinned people, including US
citizens and legal immigrants, out of work using defective "E-
Vilify" and "no-match letter" databases, the president is trying
to make immigrants scapegoats for the recession. The cowardly
Democrats in Congress are just as much to blame for trying to
exclude recent legal immigrants from health care benefits. This
will hit Spanish-speaking and Asian families the hardest. Call
off the attack dogs, Mr. President, or face the consequences at
the polls.
