Comment: Wooing Hispanic Voters - Since South Carolina the Republican Presidential candidates have changed their tune on immigration, and are vying with each other to win over 450,000 Hispanic Republican primary voters in Florida. It is worth paying close attention to their efforts in Florida, because winning a significant percentage of the Hispanic vote in the general election is critical to any Republican aspirations to the White House. Jeb Bush offers advice on ways Republicans can win Hispanics back: by showing respect and understanding for their experiences, by relating to their aspirations, by pressing for overhaul of the educational system, and most importantly by thinking of immigration reform as an economic issue, not just a border security issue. "Hispanics recognize that Democrats have failed to deliver on immigration reform, having chosen to spend their political capital on other priorities. Republicans should reengage on this issue and reframe it. Start by recognizing that new Americans strengthen our economy. We need more people to come to this country, ready to work and to contribute their creativity to our economy. U.S. immigration policies should reflect that principle. Just as Republicans believe in free trade of goods, we should support the freer flow of human talent." Please let us know your thoughts by writing to us at editor@ilw.com.

Comment: Immigrant Soldiers - The Strategy Page notes "In the last decade, the U.S. military has enlisted some 70,000 non-citizens, about five percent of all recruits. These foreigners made better soldiers than American citizens. The foreigners are tossed out during their first three months of service at half the rate of their citizen counterparts. After three years of service, 72 percent of citizens were still in uniform, compared to 84 percent of non-citizen troops. The foreign troops are more patriotic and work harder than their citizen counterparts... In the last decade, some senior American officers suggested recruiting more foreigners. Not just non-citizens with green cards but foreigners who are not residents of the United States." The illustrious history of foreigners serving in US military goes back to Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette, and continues through the civil war to present day. Offering US citizenship in return for military service to those who are de facto Americans, though not de jure Americans, due to the accident of being brought into this country as children by their parents, is consistent with this great tradition. You can see the list of immigrants who received the Medal of Honor, the highest military award given by the United States government here. Please let us know your thoughts on immigrants in the military by writing to us at editor@ilw.com.

Comment: Self Deportation - Fox News Latino reports "But by far the most memorable and the oddest moment was Romney's brilliant solution to immigration: self-deportation. Immediately, a flood of live tweets from viewers, political insiders and Latino influencers jumped to criticize his confusing answer. When asked about the process to send people home, Romney's solution left the audience intrigued, speechless and confused. 'The answer is self-deportation (with some remote laughter on the background) When they don't have work or documents they will go back home ...Ultimately we will then allow people to get back in line at home until the reach the front of the line,' Romney said." Winning a significant percentage of Latino vote is critical for any Republican hoping to become a president. Spouting anti-immigration rhetoric is a sure fire way for a candidate to "self-deport" himself from the White House - even before he gets there. What do you make of this term "self-deportation"? Let us know by writing to editor@ilw.com.

Comment: Price Of Immigration Laws - Associated Press reports "It's unclear whether farmers in Georgia and Alabama will face a shortage of workers due to tough new laws targeting illegal immigration, but some producers said they have begun changing their plans for planting and harvesting this year's crops. Some farmers said they might reduce the number of acres they plant or shift to less labor-intensive crops, while others are bracing for higher labor prices and have turned to new recruiting tools to attract workers... Since the laws were approved last year, farmers in both states have reported labor shortages because migrant workers aren't showing up and they say they can't find other workers to fill the jobs. Farmers and state officials have said that some produce was left to rot in the field last year because there weren't enough workers to help with the harvest." Whether the farmers stop growing certain crops, reduce the acreage for crops, let the crops rot in the fields, or pay much higher prices for labor -- all these will translate into higher prices for our produce, and higher grocery and restaurant bills for all of us. This is just another price we pay for draconian immigration laws. We appreciate your comments. Please write to us at editor@ilw.com.
