Focus: Deferred Action - Invitation to Speak
As a leader in the immigration world, ILW.COM is fortunate to have excellent relationships with several national and local pro- immigrant and DREAM-related organizations around the country. Jul 30 - A Golden Opportunity For Scammers

The unmatched news resource for immigration law professionals Immigration Daily July 30, 2012 Comment: A Golden Opportunity For Scammers - Several states are already anticipating large-scale fraud and deceit surrounding the Deferred Action process as the date when applications will start being accepted nears. State governments are understandably concerned that unlicensed people billing themselves as "immigration consultants" or notarios will prey on the public's lack of understanding of our complex legal system and the intricacies of applying for deferred action. In Texas, the Attorney General sought and was granted a temporary injunction and asset freeze against an organization called 'Just for People, Inc.' which took exorbitant fees while providing no real services. In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo set aside $600,000 for a legal counsel team and also apparently plans to fund a public education campaign aimed at ensuring people do not fall victim to these crooks. Perhaps NY Secretary of State Cesar Perales said it best when he noted that, "[i]t became clear to us that this was going to be a golden opportunity for scammers." The graph visually demonstrates the gap, if any, between the promises of benefits and the actual and the projected delivery of benefits. Since we started publishing it last week, we have received a few comments graph, which are reproduced below: "Lets see if Obama delivers on his commitment." By An Immigrant "We have two choices in this election, a man that made a promise and reneged on it 4 years ago and then, a man that has lived with integrity, sharing millions of his wealth with his church and other charities. I hope the immigrants in our country are not fooled again by this political ploy. President Bush tried to get the Dream Act in Congress. Immigration Daily July 20, 2012 Comment: Obama's Deferred Action Promise Graph - ILW.COM is pleased to announce Obama's Deferred Action Promise Graph. President Obama has gotten significant political mileage out of his announcement about deferred action for DREAMers. He has put his opponent, Mr. Romney, and indeed the entire Republican party, on the defensive on the issue of immigration with this brilliant political maneuver. As we have pointed out before, resources, details, and a timeline on the actual delivery of these benefits promised in his announcement have been sorely lacking. The purpose of ILW.COM's Obama's Deferred Action Promise Graph is to hold President Obama accountable for his promise. Let us briefly describe the graph. The x-axis displays a timeline with four major dates highlighted: June 15th, 2012; August 15th, 2012; November 6th, 2012; and January 20th, 2013. The first is the date of President Obama's announcement on Deferred Action. The second, the date applications for deferred action are expected to become available to eligible undocumented immigrants. The third, the date of the Presidential Election. Lastly, the fourth, the beginning of Mr. Obama's second term or Mr. Romney's first term. The y-axis displays the number of DREAMers. DHS estimates that there are 1.4 million DREAMers who may be deferred action eligible, displayed on the graph by the blue data line. The total benefits delivered and the projection of benefits to be delivered is displayed on the graph by the red data line. The gap between President Obama's promise and his delivery is the space in the graph between the blue and the red data lines. While the significance of all these dates is high, the most significant date is January 20th, 2013. The Obama administration will be able to process only a certain number of applications out of the 1.4 million eligible. On that date, The Romney administration, if it enters the White House very well might reverse the policy of the current administration. While it will be difficult for the new administration to reverse the decision on those applications already processed before the new term, those applications not yet processed will fall under the procedural discretion of the new administration. The purpose of our Obama's Deferred Action Promise Graph is to hold this administration's feet to the fire during this crucial election season so that it actually delivers on its promise to DREAMers. We will do this by reporting daily on the number of applications processed under the Obama Deferred Action policy and using the data to project the number of applications that are likely to be processed by the time a new administration takes over. By using this graph as a visual tool, we are drawing attention to the gap, if any, between Obama's promise and his delivery. If the USCIS processes these applications fast, then Mr. Obama will deserve full political credit and we will heartily commend him for following through on his promise. Comment: Napolitano on Deferred Action - In her first remarks to Congress since the Deferred Action announcement last month, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano told the House Judiciary Committee that "[o]ur nation's immigration laws must be enforced in a strong and sensible manner, but they are not designed to be blindly enforced without consideration given to the individual circumstances of each case."
